Mycology: The Hidden Wonders of Fungi
Fungi play a crucial, often overlooked, role in ecological health. From breaking down organic matter to forming mycorrhizal associations with plant roots, fungi are vital for nutrient cycling and plant resilience. We explore native fungi, mushroom cultivation, and their integration into our food-growing efforts.
Our interest extends to understanding fungal networks in the soil, their role in disease suppression, and how we can foster a healthy fungal population to support our plants and trees.
There are also mushrooms and other fungi growing wild at the research centre that have medicinal properties and it would be good to be able to understand some of the health potential from these organisms.
Fungi can also be used to process organic waste from invasive vegetation, grass, wood chips and transform it into high quality food in a short amount of time compared to growing vegatables, grain or raising animals.
